A Survey on Public Health Nursing Field Practice in Basic Nursing Program

Abstract
A Survey was conducted on 448 senior students in 6 collegiate programs and 10 diploma school of nursing, 27 public health nursing faculty and 17 public health nurses during the period of 6 weeks from June 15, to July 31, 1974, to explore the status of public health nursing field practice in basic nursing program. The pretested questionnaires were used as a tool for collecting data.
The findings are summarized as follows:
1. Weekly schedule pattern of field practice for public health nursing was established in 48.1 percent of the responded schools.
2. Nursing school offering the equal opportunities of public health nursing field practice for all the students were 82.5 percent of the responded schools. Remained schools were in selected basis.
3. Health centers were utilized as a field practice institutions of public health nursing in 88.9 precent of the responded schools.
4. Attitude of health centers to receive nursing students for public health nursing field practice was evaluated by 15.0 percent of the student, 47.4 percent of public health nursing faculty and 70.6percent of public health nurses as "favorably welcome"
5. Only 20.8 percent of the students who completed their practice considered their case loads were sufficient while 50.2 percent of them were thinking that as insufficient.
6. Utilization of facilities and supplies in health centers were evaluated by 38.2 percent of the students as unable to use. Only 2.9 percent of the students were thinking that was very much to use .
7. Students criticized about public health nurses as follows; little attention and less cooperative to the student-35.3 percent, lack of eagerness and less faithful-27.0 percent, poor interpersonal relationship-18.5 percent of the students.
8. Complaints of nursing students in relation to instruction of public health nursing filed practice were as follows; vacancy of instructor-36.8 percent, not well organized plan on practice by the instructor-22.5 percent, insufficient instruction-21.8 percent, instruction by unqualified nurse-19.4 percent.
9. Home visiting was experienced by 89.3 percent of the students, clinic management was 98.4 percent, group teaching was 23.9 percent.
10. scoring card was used as an evaluation tool for public health nursing field practice in 55.6 percent of the responded schools, check list was 22.3 percent, criterion measuring scale was 7.3 percent.
11. General complaints of the nursing students about public health nursing field practice as follows; improper and overloading task-33.5 percent, inadequate learning experience-24.7 percent, careless on aseptic techniques-14.6 percent.
